 Some Letter-writing Tips:

* Choose a single topic or facet of a topic, preferably one that has been in the news, reported in the paper to which you are writing if possible.

* The more original your presentation of your topic, the more likely it is that your letter will be published. Heartfelt letters maker a stronger impression that dry and formal letters.

* Make your main point in the 1st or 2nd paragraph

* Keep your letter brief; few papers print letters with more than 250 words, some have limits of 100 or 150 words.

* If you are sending a typed letter rather than a email, double space.

* Avoid heated rhetoric; make your points in a calm and polite fashion.

* Review your letter for typos, spelling and grammar before submitting them; carelessly written letters are not likely to be published.

* Be sure to include your name, address, phone number and email address;

* If you are submitting a letter via email, do not send your letter as an attachment; most newspapers will not open attachments because of the danger of contacting a virus.

* Be prepared for the newspaper to verify by phone or in writing that you are the actual author of your submission and that you wish it to be published.
